FUNERAL directors have hit out at rude drivers for disrespecting the dead with their road rage.
They have called for people to be more patient with funeral processions.
The call comes after a new report found more than half of drivers had seen other road users cutting into a funeral procession or overtaking aggressively.
Phillip Davies, who runs a funeral home in Carmarthen Road, Fforestfach, said: "I've had to put up with drivers hooting their horns, gesticulating rudely and using bad language.
"It doesn't happen that often but if it happens once then that's once too often isn't it?
Increase
"The people who make these gestures should think how they would like people to react if it was the funeral of their mum, dad, brother or sister. It's a question of how you are brought up."
Andrew Akins, owner of Cockwell's Funeral Services in Cwmavon, said he had seen a huge increase in people acting in a rude manner.
He said: "Last week we were waiting to turn into a main road and as we came out a car actually sped up to try and overtake us.
"He slowed down at the last minute but he could have smashed into us.
"We have even had to slam on the brakes at a zebra crossing as someone has stepped out on to the road.
"The family in the back and the flowers in the car were thrown forward.
"People have even cut in to the procession, as they are in such a rush to get to places.
"We want to make the day as easy as possible on the families and things like this don't help.
"When I was young I would show respect and stop when I saw a hearse. Now it is so rare that you notice it when someone does it."
The survey, commissioned by Co-operative Funeral Care also found that one-in-six had seen other drivers making hand gestures or behaving threateningly.

Guess, it's time to re-educate funeral directors since they should prove to be efficient, reliable and professionals to their clients.
TumugonBurahinYou don't need to rush the dead. On the other hand, this is where the importance of education and training comes in when you are planning to put up a funeral business and hire funeral personnel.
