Swansea Valley-born Archbishop wishes royal couple 'courage and clarity'

THE SWANSEA Valley-born Archbishop of Canterbury has wished Prince William and Kate Middleton the "courage and the clarity" to live out their marriage "in the full glare" of the public eye.

Rowan Williams said the couple "knew what the cost of that might be" and urged people to support them.

His advice follows the news that Kate, like Diana when she married Prince Charles, will omit the word 'obey' from her wedding vows.

With eight days to go until the royal wedding, the Archbishop, who is to marry the couple at Westminster Abbey, said in a video message filmed by Lambeth Palace: "William and Catherine are making this commitment very much in the public eye and they're sensible, realistic young people.

"They know what the cost of that might be. They've thought that through. And because of that they will need the support, the solidarity and the prayers of all those who are watching today."

He added: "I want to wish them especially the courage and clarity they'll need to live out this big commitment in the full glare — to live it out for the rest of us.

"I hope they'll be given the strength and the persistence to go on showing the rest of us what's possible for the whole of their life together."

Dr Williams said it had been a pleasure to get to know the couple, adding, "I think that they are deeply unpretentious people, and that message about taking that responsibility sensibly, realistically, courageously, comes over very strongly in conversation with them."
