Swansea traders set for talks on drink and drugs problems

TRADERS will meet next month to discuss how to tackle ongoing problems in Swansea city centre.

The city's drink and drugs problems, highlighted by Swansea's Lord Mayor Richard Lewis last week, as well as the economic downturn, traffic issues and problems for small businesses will all be on the agenda at the Grand Hotel in High Street on Friday, May 13.

The meeting has been called by Swansea West MP Geraint Davies following initial discussions with traders last week.

Mr Davies said: "We want to identify the problems in the city centre, come up with an action plan and suggest solutions.

"We want to deal with the issues. I am being told small traders' business is plummeting and some are on the verge of bankruptcy.

"We have a combination of problems in the city, there is the general economic squeeze which is being made worse here because of the number of public sector jobs.

"Then there is the problem of drinking and drug-taking in parts of the city centre, which clearly doesn't help business.

"And then we have the constant disruption of traffic movement in the city caused by the council digging up the road.

"We must give the impression that Swansea is open for business."
