Peer talks to residents about opposing change

Tory party co-chairman Baroness Warsi was out canvassing in Market Harborough yesterday for the "Say No to AV" campaign.

The life peer handed out leaflets and talked to people in the town centre for almost an hour.

On Thursday, May 5, people will be given the opportunity to say whether they want the country to adopt the alternative vote (AV) system, and ditch first past the post (FPTP).

Under AV, voters rank candidates in order of preference. Candidates are eliminated until someone secures more than 50 per cent backing, after people's second, third and fourth preferences, and so on, are taken into account.

Baroness Warsi said: "We found some definite No voters and some definite Yes voters. There were a number of undecideds, too.

"I asked them the question, what does AV fix? If it does not fix anything, why do it?"

Among the people she talked to was taxi driver Haq Nawaz, 47, from Foxton.

Mr Nawaz said: "I have yet to read the information about the proposal or make up my mind."

After the Market Harborough visit, the baroness met party members, then went on to Rutland.
