Vandal's wrecking spree after 3-day drink and drugs bender

A PAIR of vandals who catapulted ball barings from the window of a moving car could have killed someone, according to magistrates.

Jay Ben William Leach and Kevin Bradley Lane, both 25, drove around Carmarthen indiscriminately smashing car windows and shop fronts.

Leach drove while Lane fired the metal balls out of the window with a sling-shot. There was a second passenger who the pair refused to name.

Lane told police he was "off his head on drink and drugs", having been on a three-day bender. He said he was so out of it he could not focus on what he was aiming at.

Prosecutors said the damage could exceed 5,000.

Leach, of Russell Terrace, Carmarthen, and Lane, of Pentyborthman, Bancyffordd, Llandysul, pleaded guilty to ten charges of criminal damage each at Llanelli Magistrates' Court.

Vaughan Pritchard Jones, prosecuting, showed the court a photo of a car door dented by one of the metal balls.

Magistrate David Owens said: "If the baring hit someone in the head there could have been fatal injuries.

"We also take into account your failure to identify the third passenger in the car, and that you apparently show no remorse."

After this remark Lane told his solicitor, Mr Williams, that he was in fact sorry. "Mr Lane wanted to say that if any of the victims were here today he would approach them and apologise," said Mr Williams.

Using the registration number, police traced the car to Leach, who admitted he had been driving at the time. He said he did not know the passengers were firing ball barings out of the windows. But when officers examined CCTV footage, Leach was seen leaning forward so his passenger could get a better aim.

Lane admitted they carried out the offence together.

"In an interview Lane said he was 'off his head on drink and drugs, having been on a three-day bender'," said Mr Jones. "He said he was so out of his head he could not focus what he was aiming at."

Leach and Lane will appear again at Llanelli Magistrates' Court on May 11.
