Hot weather brings risk of smog alert to South Wales during Easter Weekend

IT'S the health advice that some people have been craving for years — avoid outdoor exercise.

But it comes with a downside — warnings of a smog alert in Wales, and across the border.

The UK Government said there could be potentially dangerous levels of air pollution, brought on by the enduring warm and still conditions.

The current high pressure system means levels of ozone and polluting particles known as PM10s, which can affect people's health, are expected to increase.

According to the Assembly Government around 24,000 people in Wales currently live in so-called air quality management areas, with around 20,000 of those in Hafod, Swansea, and Margam and Taibach.

Air quality management areas are declared in specific locations where atmospheric concentrations of one or more pollutants are either close to or exceeding statutory levels.

The major source of pollution within these locations is generally road traffic — and the relevant local authority must come up with an action plan once an area is established.

UK Government department Defra said the current conditions may affect people with asthma.

It urged the public to take sensible precautions such as avoiding outdoor exercise and unnecessary short car journeys.

The Post contacted Environment Agency Wales and Public Health Protection for Wales, but they did not comment.

Meanwhile, Wales's chief medical officer, Dr Tony Jewell, urged people on regular medication to make sure that they had enough to last them over the long bank holiday weekends.

The roads are set to be busy over the Easter weekend, and sunshine — with some cloud — is forecast for Swansea until Tuesday at least.

Temperatures, however, are set to decrease slightly from Thursday's high of 21C.

Defra's free helpline, 0800 556677, gives updates on the levels of polluting particles and health advice.
