Social workers given 1,100 touch-screen laptops

Social workers are being issued with new touch-screen laptops as part of Leicester City Council's plan to replace old computers.

The council has bought 259 of the Hewlett Packard notebook devices, each costing 1,100.

The computers allow staff who are out of the office visiting residents to type their reports direct on to the screen then download them when they get back into the office.

The council said the devices will save officers' time typing up notes and allow them to spend longer with people they are helping.

A council spokesman said: "The laptops have been funded by a Department of Health grant of 207,000, for use on IT equipment in Adult Social Care, and as part of the council's PC replacement budget of old computers.

"The process of replacing the old computers with laptops began in June 2010.

"The laptops are for our frontline social workers who visit service users in their homes.

"The aim is to reduce the amount of time our social workers spend on admin and maximising the time they spend with service users.

"Staff feedback has been positive and we hope this is coming across to our service users already."
