A NEATH man who is a highly decorated former member of the Royal Air Force has been jailed for eight months for offences of child pornography.
Mark Russell was caught in possession of almost 300 indecent photographs of children, Swansea Crown Court was told.
He was also found to have nearly 300 images of "extreme pornography" showing people engaging in sex acts with animals such as horses and dogs.
Russell, 47, of Darran Park, Neath Abbey, pleaded guilty to a 20-count indictment at a court hearing last month.
Sentencing was adjourned until this week while a background report was prepared by a probation officer.
Russell admitted making "real and indecent" photographs of children between March and August, 2008, and having 285 such images in his possession on September 26 last year.
He also pleaded guilty to possessing — in 2008 and last year — "extreme pornography" depicting people engaging in sex acts with animals, and having 284 such images in his possession on September 26 last year.
At the plea hearing Russell's solicitor, Giles Hayes, told the court: "He is a highly decorated former member of the Royal Air Force."
Carina Hughes, prosecuting, said Russell was arrested after detectives obtained a warrant authorising them to search his home last September.
The offending images were found on his computer and on a large number of DVDs.
Miss Hughes told the court that, when interviewed, Russell said he believed he had turned to such material as a result of "trauma" suffered during his military career.
Mr Hayes emphasised that DVLA worker Russell had left the RAF with an exemplary record.
"But he now recognises that he has deep-seated problems," said the solicitor.
Judge Keith Thomas, who ruled that only immediate custody was appropriate, directed that Russell must be registered as a sex offender for ten years.
