'We want Roi to have the life he really deserves'

TIME is running out for a "one in a million" Cavalier puppy who needs a life-saving operation.

Six-month-old Roi, who has hydrocephalus, is being cared for at Lizzie's Barn Sanctuary in Kidwelly.

But the centre needs to find 5,000 by the end of this month to ensure he can have the surgery he desperately needs.

Hydrocephalus is a build up of fluid inside the skull, leading to brain swelling.

Roi needs an operation to place a permanent shunt to drain the fluid.

Fionna Ashman, who runs the sanctuary with her husband Nick and their son Toby, said: "Time is running out for Roi to have this operation.

"We've already raised around 1,500 which covered his first appointment, which included an MRI scan and specialist assessment, but in total we'll need to raise up to 5,500."

Roi, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, came from a backyard breeder.

Fionna said Roi is developing slowly, but finds it difficult to play like other puppies.

"He will suffer irreparable brain damage and death if he's not helped," said Fionna.

"Roi's turning out to be a wonderful little character. He's started trying to play with the other dogs and likes running with them.

"Everyone who meets Roi falls in love with him. He's one in a million and would make someone really happy.

"He really needs this operation in May. Roi's on steroids which have kept the fluid down, but that's only a short-term option. He'll eventually have side effects from the steroids and if he comes off them the pressure will build up and up.

"We would have to put Roi to sleep, but we don't want to do that, we want him to have the life he deserves."

If enough money is raised the surgery will take place in Hertfordshire by two neurosurgeons and will take around three-and-a-half hours.

"Roi loves people. He doesn't know how to play properly yet, but he's learning.

"If someone goes to pick him up he's inclined to go away because it was unpleasant for him, he'd have such a terrible headache. But every day he's getting better and better and is beginning to get over these issues.

"Roi's so loving, he's quite a clown and likes making you laugh. He's improved incredibly.

"If we can just find 5,000 people to give 1 each we will be able to save Roi's life."
