Teenage driver knocked down ex-friend

An irate teenage motorist deliberately drove on to the pavement and knocked down his former friend, a court heard.

Luke Craig Holford was furious after the pair had a punch up three days earlier.

When Holford (19) spotted the victim walking on a road in Braunstone, at 8pm on May 19 last year, he drove after him.

Leicester Crown Court was told the victim spotted Holford at the wheel of a Peugeot and cut through an alleyway leading into Hand Avenue.

Barbara Graham, prosecuting, said the vehicle could not access the alley and reversed.

The victim thought the defendant had gone away, until he heard the car's screeching tyres approaching Hand Avenue.

Ms Graham said: "The car was on the opposite side of the road but crossed over."

The victim later told the police: "He drove towards me onto the path and hit me directly on the kneecaps and knocked me to the floor."

The injured teenager managed to get up and stagger to his nearby back garden.

His mother immediately called the police.

The victim suffered sore knees with abrasions and cuts to his hands.

Ms Graham said: "This involved premeditation and the use of a vehicle as a weapon."

Holford, of Western Road, in West End, Leicester, was jailed for one year and nine months.

He pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm to the victim, a former friend he had known since school days.

The defendant also admitted a public order offence, of threatening behaviour, in the early hours of last New Year's Eve in Humberstone Gate, in the city centre.

It involved the defendant acting aggressively and punching a male during a street brawl.

Holford further admitted breaching a 36-week suspended detention sentence previously imposed for an offence of affray.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to attend court on February 17 this year.

Andrew Bolc, mitigating, said: "The defendant and the complainant were childhood friends and had previously lived together in the same hostel but had grown apart.

"It seems the defendant's girlfriend had a mutual attraction to the complainant and there were text messages between them."

Holford confronted him on May 16 and had a punch-up with him in the street.

He later apparently heard rumours the complainant was boasting about having punched him.

When he saw him in the street three days later he went after him, not intending to run him over, said Mr Bolc.
