College centre tribute to road crash students

A college is to dedicate its new 1 million education centre to the memory of three students who lost their lives in a road crash in South Africa.

Sami Lake, Eleanor Payne and Dan Greenwood were killed on June 10 last year while on a wildlife and conservation field trip as part of their animal management courses at Brooksby Melton College.

Staff and students have been looking for ways to create a lasting tribute to the three since the crash, and have decided it will take the form of the college's animal and equine centre.

The centre is being built on one of the college's four campuses, an 850-acre site near Brooksby where the three studied.

It is being built to teach a growing number of pupils who wanting to study animal management courses, and will include a fish, reptile and exotic animal area, a cafe and accommodation for higher education and international students.

College spokeswoman Anita Ladva said: "It will be dedicated to the students who died but also to those that survived and the staff who were victims of the crash.

"For some time we have been looking around for a way to suitably pay tribute to everyone involved and this seemed the best way.

"The three of them loved the college and the course, and to have them remembered through this building is very appropriate.

"The anniversary of the crash is approaching and the students will be marking that in their own way.

"Obviously it will be a difficult and emotional time for everyone here, but we will be remembering them with fondness and sadness.

"The college will be doing something more formal in September when term restarts after the summer break."

The families of Eleanor, 19, from Aston Flamville, near Hinckley, Sami, 19, from Syston, and Dan, 22, also from Syston, are to be invited to the opening of the centre, which will include a plaque paying tribute to the victims.

The fatal crash happened when the 18-strong college party was coming to the end of its South African trip.

The students and staff were in a bus travelling along a country road near the town of Nelspruit when the driver lost control and the vehicle overturned.

The driver was arrested and later released. An inquest concluded the deaths had been caused by a tragic accident.

The college was given a Government grant of 225,000 towards the cost of the centre and has invested the rest of the money itself following the sale of other properties it no longer needs.
