Shelter centre of attention

YOUNGSTERS in Skewen now have their own place to hang out in.

A shelter has gone up outside the Caewathan Youth Centre courtesy of a grant from the South Wales Police Youth Trust.

And it has already proved a hit.

Olivia Evans, aged 11, said: "We like our new shelter a lot, and we all give it 10 out of 10."

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Jade Wilcox said: "I've been coming to the centre for four years and it just keeps getting better."

Retired South Wales Police officer and centre volunteer Ken Thomas said: "We would all like to thank the youth trust for their very kind support, and already it has made a massive difference to the community.

"The centre has become a real hub of the community and is a focal point for young people."

The initial funding bid got the backing of chief inspector Andy Kingdom.

He said: "Young people are our future and together we need to do as much as possible to support them. The youth centre is helping to get kids off the street."
