Man arrested after fire at Leicester Royal Infirmary

​Wards at the Leicester Royal Infirmary have been evacuated after a serious fire at the hospital.
The blaze broke out in ward eight of the hospital's Balmoral building at about 12.20am today.
Firefighters were called and quickly put out the flames but extensive fire damage was caused to a bay in Ward 8, together with widespread smoke damage to the remainder of the ward.
A number of other wards within the hospital have been affected by smoke.
A patient was slightly injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment and relatives have been informed.
In all 105 patients, and some staff members, have been evacuated from Wards seven, eight, nine, 11, 16 and 25 to other wards within the hospital.
Police and fire officers have launched a joint investigation and a 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Ward 8 has been closed and cordoned off so a forensic investigation can take place.
The hospital said relatives of people being treated there should be reassured that all patients have been accounted for and have been safely relocated to other wards within the hospital and made comfortable.
At the height of the incident, seven fire engines were in attendance, with an incident support vehicle and command support vehicle.
Fire service incident commander Dave Watson praised the quick response by hospital staff in assisting the evacuation of the affected wards.
