Two sibling youngsters 'lucky to be alive' after dramatic sea rescue

TWO youngsters are lucky to be alive after getting into difficulty in the water off the South Gower coast.

A 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy were unable to get out of the water on Saturday morning, after jumping off rocks at Pobbles Beach, near Three Cliffs.

The coastguard was alerted that the pair had got into problems at around 11am.

Coastguard Will Parfitt said: "Both are lucky to be alive.

"The water is about the coldest of the year, it's about eight degrees."

He added: "We had a phone call from a mother of two children, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, who were in difficulties in the water after jumping off the rocks.

"We tasked the RAF rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor, the Mumbles and Horton inshore lifeboat, along with the Mumbles coastguard rescue team.

"Also on the scene was the police helicopter which was at a nearby incident and arrived quickly."

He said they were able to spot the two youngsters quickly and tasked the Horton inshore lifeboat.

"The boy scrambled onto the rocks to safety and the 17-year-old girl was helped by the lifeboat," he added.

"She was suffering from cuts from the rocks and ill effects of being in the water, and had mild hypothermia. She was transferred to the beach by the lifeboat and was checked over by the coastguard on scene."

Mr Parfitt has warned people that sea temperatures remain cold at this time of year.
