South Africa's rand gained over one percent against the dollar on Thursday as gold climbed towards historic highs on eurozone jitters.

The rand was trading at 6.8840 against the dollar at 14:38 SA time, from Wednesday's New York close of 6.9546.
It hit 6.8776 earlier, its strongest level since March 15.
The rand was also firming ahead of a central bank central interest rate decision at 15:00 SA time. - Reuters
