Tenants handed keys to new council homes

Tenants in Leicester will be handed the keys to their new council homes today

The homes are some of the first to be built in the city for more than 30 years.

The 35 homes are at the former Godstow Walk in the city - now Littlemore Close, Radley Road and Oxon Way - with the first few now complete and ready to move into. The development will be completed by June.

Leicester City Council was allocated 7m from the Homes and Communities Agency in 2009 to provide 146 new council homes. The council funded approximately 8m towards the project.

This development, which cost approximately 3.6m is one of five sites across the city, which are being built as part of the scheme.

Councillor Paul Westley said: "The houses look fantastic and it's nice to see tenants so happy moving into their new homes."

There are about 8,500 people on the city council's housing register, including 4,000 families. There are also more than 500 people in hostels across the city.
