Bereaved families honour war dead

A hundred families gathered to remember their loved ones in a moving ceremony.

Grieving relatives from throughout the country congregated at the War Memorial Tower in Loughborough on Saturday to lay a wreath.

The gathering was of members of the Bereaved Families Support Group, a national organisation recognised by the Ministry of Defence and administered by the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

The charity group was established to help families who have lost loved ones serving in the armed forces, with most members having lost people during conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Family members read poems and held a two-minute silence before a wreath and individual roses were laid on the steps of the memorial in Queen's Park.

Carl and Teresa Woods, of Melton Mowbray, were there to remember their 24-year-old son, Corporal Marcin Wojtak.

Cpl Wojtak died when the vehicle he was in was hit by a roadside bomb on a patrol near Camp Bastion, Afghanistan, in October 2009.

Mrs Woods said: "Today is very special for us. It is a fitting way to honour the memory of our son and all the other loved ones lost in conflict."

The 53-year-old mother said she and her husband had only recently joined the Bereaved Families Support Group.

"We thought we were alone in our grief but having met these people we know that is not the case. We can give each all kinds of support, not least the freedom to talk about the same issue.

"There is not a single day when I have not cried for my son. Last night and today were no exception, but now I know I do not cry alone. This is our first group act of remembrance, but it will not be our last."

The group, which meets every six months, will next meet in Scarborough later this year.
