Crash victims' families plan a memorial garden

The families of two women killed in a car crash want to create a memorial garden at a spot where they used to play together as children.

Jade Srawley and Amelia Ecob's parents want a place where friends can remember them in their home village of Battram, near Coalville.

The life-long friends, both 20, died in the collision near Barlestone as they were driving to the cinema on Thursday, January 27.

A friend who was with them escaped without injury.

Amelia's mum Jane said a spot for the garden had been earmarked near Battram village hall, a short distance from where they lived.

Discussions have been held with Ibstock Parish Council, which owns the land and the families are now trying to raise 2,000 for furniture, plants and fencing for the area.

Jane said: "We just want a spot where anyone who knew the girls can go to have a quiet moment to think about them.

"It's isn't going to be a huge area but it will have a big significance for us.

"We want to do some planting and put in some pagoda seats as well as fencing to mark the area off.

"Then we will have some wind chimes.

"That will help make it a really relaxing place."

Jade's father Lee said: "Battram is a small village and everybody knew the girls.

"Everyone has been affected by this and a lot of their friends have been asking if we would do something like this. The girls were always playing around the village hall when they were little so that would be a great spot.

"It will be an area where people can drop in for 10 minutes or half an hour so they can reflect on the girls' lives.

"I will be calling round a few companies to see if they can donate anything such as seating or plants."

Jade worked as a shift manager at Burger King, in Markfield, and Amelia was a shop assistant at the Co-op in Ibstock.

The families hope the parish council will agree to the garden at its meeting in April and that they could have it open in May.

The police are still investigating the crash, which happened on the B585 at 8pm.

The collision involved Jade's Renault Twingo, a white Fiat van, a Toyota Rav 4 and a Ford Focus.

Officers have arrested three men in connection with the crash and they remain on police bail.
