Madalla bomb blast: Ex-soldier declared wanted

The State Security Service yesterday named another suspect in the Christmas Day bombing at Madalla that killed at least 40 people, following the re-arrest last week of Kabiru Sokoto.

SSS declared Habibu Bama wanted over the blast at St. Theresa?s Catholic Church in Niger State.

A grainy picture of Bama is included in the wanted notice issued.

?The person whose photograph appears above is Habibu Bama. He is hereby declared wanted by the Federal Government in connection with crimes against the State,? spokesperson for the SSS Marilyn Ogar said in a statement.

?Habibu Bama is an ex-soldier, Kanuri by tribe and hails from Bama, Borno State. He is also known by the following names: Habib Bama, Shuaibu Bama, and Habib Mamman.

?Members of the public with any information that could lead to his arrest are hereby implored to immediately contact the nearest Police station, Military formation or any other security agency, please.?

Ogar did not say specifically what crimes Bama is suspected of committing, but the file containing her emailed statement is titled: Habibu Bama (Madalla).

The service did not give further information on Bama?s military service or on exactly what role he played in the bombing at Madalla.

But a security source told Daily Trust yesterday that Habibu Bama is the prime suspect in the Madalla bombing, and not Kabiru Sokoto as the police earlier claimed.

Investigations by a Daily Trust reporter at Bama in Borno State yesterday showed that Habibu was a student of the Government Science Secondary School Bama.

He later joined the Nigerian Army.

Some youths in Bama who spoke to our reporter in confidence confirmed that the man is an indigene of Bama Local Government Area.

?He is an easy going person but we don?t know why he left the Army,? a source said.

?He stays in between Bama and Bulaje village near Gwoza because that is where his parents are residing,? a resident said.

A former colleague of Habibu told our reporter that they attended the same school and also served in the Army together.

?Habib is calm, reserved and adventurous,? the man said.

It was not clear yesterday if the declaration of Habibu Bama as a wanted person was as a result of any information provided by Kabiru Sokoto, who has been in detention since his re-arrest on Friday at Mutum Biyu, Taraba State.

Media reports not confirmed by the authorities said over the past week that Sokoto has named high-profile leaders of Boko Haram sect, which claimed responsibility for the Madalla blast and other bombings in the North.

Another high profile Boko Haram leader in SSS custody is sect spokesman Abul Qaqa, who was captured in Kaduna two weeks ago. But the authorities have not officially acknowledged holding him.
