Top award for police volunteer Eric

A police volunteer who has tripled the number of Neighbourhood Watch schemes in his town has been rewarded for his efforts.

Eric Tindall, 63, of Melton, won Leicestershire Constabulary's Volunteer of the Year competition.

Eric started as a police volunteer two years ago working in Melton's CCTV department.

Sgt Jo Hodson, who nominated him for the award, wanted to expand the number of Neighbourhood Watch schemes in the town and asked Eric for help.

Within two months he had increased the number of schemes by 300 per cent now covering more than 70 streets in the town.

Sgt Hodson said: "He has volunteered an impressive 250 hours of his own time in just two months and has become part of the fabric of the police in Melton.

"I firmly believe he will achieve his ambition of making the town of Melton the first town in the country to be covered by a scheme."

Eric said: "It is my goal to have a Neighbourhood Watch coordinator on every street in Melton, so far we have 87 schemes on board and 70 of the 400 streets covered.

"I am sure we can improve this even further and I have great hopes that we can achieve our aim."

Deputy Chief Constable David Evans will present him with his award on March 23.
