A homeowner is warning a local authority someone could be seriously injured or even killed by a branch falling from two 100ft trees in his garden.
Charnwood Borough Council put tree preservation orders on the giant Wellingtonias in December, after hearing owner Stuart Aynsley, who lives in Queniborough, planned to cut them down.
Mr Aynsley and his neighbours, in Syston Road, are pleading with the authority to let him fell the trees, which he describes as "an accident waiting to happen".
The council's appeals and reviews committee, which meets on Monday, will hear a report from its landscape officer, who recommends the order stays.
Mr Aynsley said: "These two trees have outgrown their environment and need to come down.
"One large branch came through the roof, one hit a car windscreen and we have had several large branches in the road, which carries a lot of traffic and is a busy bus route. "Not only are they a danger to traffic, but also to mothers walking their children to school. The branches are so big that if one hit someone they would probably be killed."
Queniborough parish councillor Ernie Brookes, who lives nearby, said: "I can endorse the concerns of the residents that the trees constitute a danger to road users and members of the public.
"I have witnessed large branches which have fallen from the trees in stormy weather.
"I am concerned that a tree preservation order has been made on these trees without, apparently, any consultation with the council's tree warden or the parish council."
Queniborough Primary School headteacher Joy Hardy, who lives opposite, said: "We have had sleepless nights when it is windy, worrying that these trees will crash into our house.
"I have concerns about my pupils walking by these trees. One of the branches falling from height could very easily kill a young child.
"I would never forgive myself if a child was injured because of my failure to voice my concerns."
Neighbour Gordon Hallam said: "Although they may be in sound condition, the nature of the trees mean they are a menace to pedestrians and motorists. When the occupant has been away, I have had to drag fallen branches, which could injure or even kill, clear of the road."
Council landscape officer Chris Buckingham said: "The Wellingtonias are considered to make a valuable contribution to the visual amenity of the area. It is unrealistic to condemn trees if a branch falls in such situations if the risks can be managed to a reasonable extent."
His report recommends the committee to confirm the order without modification.
