No stalling for traders

IT'S hats off to the city market traders who will be open as usual today.

Despite most of the nation stopping in their tracks for the royal wedding, it will be business as usual in Swansea Market.

Jan Evans, who runs Jan Evans Bakery, said: "A lot of my Friday customers have already come in as they don't know we are open 8am to 4pm.

"Carol Watts has organised a buffet so we will still be celebrating the wedding.

"There are around five traders involved and we have all contributed to the buffet. It is also a bit of thank you to the staff who are working."

Rand near 4-month high, stocks to open flat

The rand steadied near four-month highs against the dollar and looked set to holding its gains with the dollar on the back foot and gold prices near record highs.

Johannesburg - South Africa's rand steadied near four-month highs against the dollar on Friday and looked set to holding its gains with the dollar on the back foot and gold prices near record highs.

Domestic stocks looked set to open flat, with the June futures contract of blue chips down 0.06 percent, before the 0700 GMT start of trade.

The rand advanced to 6.5820 in the previous session its strongest since January 3, before running out of steam.

It is unlikely to gain further on Friday, with light trading conditions domestically and in Britain.

By 0642 GMT, it was trading at 6.6050 against the dollar, not far from Thursday's New York close of 6.5975.

The rand will have to pierce the January 3 high of 6.55 to target a 2007 high of 6.43. Charts suggest it will meet some resistance at 6.58.

“Trading is fairly light. We'll be confined to the ranges of yesterday - 6.58 on the downside and 6.63/64 on the upside,” said a Johannesburg-based dealer.

Market reaction to data showing credit growth slowed in March was muted. The data pointed to sluggish credit growth that supports the case for leaving the repo rate unchanged at 5.5 percent.

On fixed income, bonds firmed slightly. The yield on the 2015 bond fell 0.5 basis points to 7.625 percent and that on the 2026 issue was down one basis point to 8.645 percent. - Reuters

Cakes, cards and City stars as three celebrate centuries

Some of the county's oldest birthday boys and girls celebrated centenaries this week.

Among them was Herbert Wood, who marked his 100th birthday yesterday with a day out at Leicester City Football Club's training ground.

Mr Wood, of Beaumont Leys, Leicester, met players Kyle Naughton, Lloyd Dyer and Andy King, as well as manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

His daughter-in-law, Jan Wood, 71, said: "He had a lovely time and after meeting the city players he had a big party with all of us."

Mr Wood, who served in the Royal Navy and then worked as a butcher, has two children, six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a two-month-old great-great-granddaughter, Holly.

Jan said: "He's still fantastic for 100 and he still has his memory and everything.

"He was chatting away to a couple of other Navy veterans who came to his party."

Hilda Garratt, who lives in North Evington, Leicester, was born on the same day as Mr Wood.

Miss Garratt, who did not marry, has many relatives who are helping her to live independently.

They include her niece, Sue Palmer, and Sue's husband, Barrie, who live in Blaby.

Barrie said: "Hilda is a very interesting lady. When she was about 20 she worked as a seamstress on a coat for a prince of Belgium.

"After that she worked for lens manufacturer Rank Taylor Hobson, where she was head of a department.

"She's also a keen painter and well-travelled. We had a lot of the family here yesterday for a lovely tea party with a wonderful cake and some champagne."

Also turning 100 this week was Elsie Park, of East Goscote, who celebrated with her grandchildren and their families on Sunday.

She also had a party with friends at Primrose Lodge, in the village, earlier in the day.

Berbatov back for United's Arsenal trip

? Bulgarian missed past three games with groin injury
? Darren Fletcher also close to return after reserve-team outing

Dimitar Berbatov will return to the Manchester United squad for Sunday's Premier League visit to Arsenal.

The Bulgarian has missed three games with a groin injury sustained in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City earlier this month. However, he is available now as United chase the victory that would end Arsenal's flickering title challenge.

"Dimitar is fit again," Sir Alex Ferguson said. "He had a slight groin strain but he has trained all week."

In addition, the United manager said Darren Fletcher had come through a 45-minute reserve-team appearance without a problem on Thursday night and is now in line to play some part in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final decider with Schalke at Old Trafford.

"He [Fletcher] is progressing and it is possible we could include him on Wednesday for another 45 minutes," Ferguson said. "It is good that he is back. He has put his weight back on. He has worked hard in the gym. He is a great addition to the squad."

With Chelsea due to visit Old Trafford next week, United are anxious to avoid having their lead cut to three points on Sunday, although Ferguson is quite happy with the present situation: "Two months ago, everyone was looking at these matches as league deciders ? and they probably are. But we are going into them in good form so why can we not win them?

"Teams are going to drop points on the run-in, including Chelsea. Hopefully we get to a point where we need to win our last home game ? against Blackpool ? to win the league. I would take that."

Delon Armitage of London Irish cited for striking Stephen Myler

? England full-back faces hearing on Tuesday
? Missed Six Nations because of suspension

The London Irish full-back Delon Armitage has been cited for striking the Northampton fly-half Stephen Myler. Armitage missed this season's Six Nations Championship after receiving an eight-week ban for pushing an anti-doping officer and using threatening and/or abusive language during a test after a Premiership game against Bath on 1 January.

Armitage, who has 19 caps, was cited for striking Myler during a Premiership match last weekend. He will face a Rugby Football Union disciplinary hearing on Tuesday; any suspension could keep him out of England's match against the Barbarians on 29 May and the England Saxons' Churchill Cup campaign in June.

Armitage was reported by an independent citing officer, Alan Mansell, for striking Myler with his hand. He will face a three-man RFU panel consisting of the chairman, Jeremy Summers, Philip Evans and Peter Budge. If the charge is proved, Armitage's recent suspension will be likely to be taken into account. He appealed that ban, unsuccessfully.

Ben Foden has established himself as England's No1 full-back this season but Armitage's ability to play at 15, at centre or on the wing makes him a valuable option for Martin Johnson, the national team's manager. The cut-off date for naming World Cup squads is 22 August, and the tournament starts in Auckland on 9 September.
