Scotland flanker John Barclay to keep battling for Glasgow Warriors

? Warriors feared formidable No8 would leave after eight years
? 'Barclay is right up there with the best,' says Warriors coach

The Scotland flanker John Barclay has allayed fears at Glasgow Warriors that he would be leaving at the end of the season by signing a one-year contract extension.

It was anticipated Barclay, who has been among the leading opensides in Europe in recent seasons, might join Sale Sharks-bound second row Richie Gray in seeking a new club.

The 25-year-old, who has 37 caps, has agreed to stay on until the end of the 2012-13 campaign, with the option of a further year. He is the 17th frontline Warriors player to sign a contract extension in recent months.

Barclay said: "I'm delighted to be re-signing at a time when the club is really going places. I've been part of Glasgow for eight years and the atmosphere and ambition around the club is the best I've ever experienced.

"It's always a big call to decide where your future lies, particularly when you've been with one club for a significant period. I've taken some time to think through the decision and I'm convinced that it's the right one.

"I'll be giving my all for [head coach] Sean Lineen and will be doing likewise when Gregor [Townsend], whom I know well from Scotland duty, takes over as head coach next season."

Barclay has also operated at blindside and No8 and will face further back-row competition with the arrivals of Tonga's World Cup No8 Viliami Ma'afu and the All Black Angus Macdonald.

Lineen said: "It's been great to see John develop from an 18-year-old with all the right raw materials into a proper Warrior who, on his day, is right up there with the best in the business. At 25, he should be just starting to come into his prime."
