Reps: N44m bribery probe will be aired live

The House of Representatives yesterday said that investigation into the alleged N44 million bribe against Rep. Herman Hembe by Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Ms Arunma Oteh will be aired live on television networks.

The duo are entangled in corruption accusations, starting last Wednesday when Hembe accused Oteh of spending N850,000 on food in a day and of incurring N30 million hotel bills. Oteh hit back the following day, saying the committee chairman demanded bribes of N44 million and that he also collected foreign trip estacods from SEC for a journey he didn?t make.

House spokesman Zakari Mohammed (PDP, Kwara), who made this known in Abuja yesterday, said the House is fully ready to beam live the investigation by the Ethics and Privileges Committee led by Samson Osagie (ACN, Edo) and the Ad hoc committee that has taken over the probe of the capital market led by Rep. Ibrahim Tukur El-Sudi (PDP, Taraba) were set to begin sitting next week.

Mohammed said the alleged bribery scandal would not deter the House from continuing the probe and others by standing and ad-hoc committees.

He said that the development would not stop committees of the House from carrying out its oversight functions in accordance with the provisions of the constitution adding: ?The spokesman of SEC should be asked to cease gun, because committees have been empowered already to look at the matter.?

Meanwhile, Mohammed confirmed that Hembe had received invitation by the anti-graft agency and was billed to appear at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) office today.
