Andy Murray powered into the quarter-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open with a dominant victory over the Frenchman Gilles Simon in Miami.
The Briton won 6-3, 6-4 in a match where both men played some superb tennis but Murray was far more consistent and had more shots to call upon. The No4 seed will meet Janko Tipsarevic, seeded ninth, in the last eight.
The win came after Murray had dealt Great Britain's hopes of returning to the Davis Cup World Group a significant blow by announcing he would not play in next month's tie with Belgium in Glasgow.
Victory at Braehead Arena over the Easter weekend would send Leon Smith's team through to a World Group play-off in September but they will be major underdogs for the Europe/Africa Zone second-round match.
Belgium's singles players Olivier Rochus and Steve Darcis are ranked 52nd and 68th respectively, well ahead of Britain's James Ward (162) and Dan Evans (291), and the only rubber the hosts will be favourites to win will be the doubles, where Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins should prevail.
The tie comes at a difficult time for the world No4, in the key transition period between hard-court and clay-court stretches of the season, and Murray is keen to stay in the US and work with his coach, Ivan Lendl.
Meanwhile Rafael Nadal also reached the quarter-finals, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Kei Nishikori, as did the top seed Novak Djokovic with a straight-sets win over Richard Gasquet.
However, Roger Federer's run of 16 victories came to an end with a surprise defeat by Andy Roddick 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
