Sebastian Larsson to have surgery in race to be fit for Euro 2012

? Swede will miss rest of Sunderland's season
? Kieran Richardson also sits out rest of games

Sebastian Larsson has undergone hernia surgery in an attempt to keep his chances of facing England in Euro 2102 alive. The Sweden international, along with his team-mate Kieran Richardson, the former Manchester United player, will miss the rest of the domestic season after having similar operations this week. They will both sit out the closing Premier League fixtures against Bolton, Fulham and Manchester United, and while the left-back Richardson will have a full summer break to recover from his procedure, the midfielder Larsson will hope he is ready to resume training much more quickly with the Euro 2012 finals firmly in his sights. Sunderland's manager Martin O'Neill revealed that the 26-year-old Larsson, who joined the club on a free transfer from Birmingham City last summer, offered to delay surgery until the end of the campaign, but that he took the decision to send him for the operation sooner rather than later. O'Neill said: "Seb has been complaining of pain for some weeks now ? he's really been sore. He has got through the games, but it's been a bit of a problem for him and he hasn't been able to train properly. Seb was going to wait until the end of the season, but then he wouldn't have got anything done with the Euros in mind. I thought that he has really put the effort in here and he deserved to try and get himself right for the Euros."It [the decision] was really down to myself. Seb was really prepared to play through it, but his efforts over the last few months have been fantastic, so we will try and do without him for the last few games.

"Having the surgery now gives him the chance to be properly fit for the Euros and then have some sort of summer break before coming back to us fresh and ready for the start of next season."

Sweden, who have been drawn in England's group for this summer's tournament in Poland and Ukraine, will play two home friendlies, against Iceland on 30 May and Serbia on 5 June, before they head off to Eastern Europe.

They will open their campaign against co-hosts Ukraine on 11 June before their clash with England four days later, and will conclude the group stage against France on 19 June.
