Froome races into Vuelta a Espaa lead

? Team Sky rider eclipses Bradley Wiggins in time trial
? Wiggins lies third after Tony Martin wins stage

Team Sky's Chris Froome completed his journey from Kenya via South Africa and into the British sporting elite yesterday when he took the race lead at the Vuelta a Espaa, banishing his team leader, Bradley Wiggins, into third place.

The 26-year-old rode the stage of his life to finish second behind the German Tony Martin in the individual time trial and wrest the red jersey from Bauke Mollema.

Such an outcome had seemed unlikely when Wiggins ? whose remarkable climb on stage nine had been aided by Froome and had raised hopes Monday's that he would take the race leadership ? had threatened Martin's time, but the three-times Olympic champion faded in the final stages of the 29.2-mile course.

Froome, who was born in Kenya and began his professional career in South Africa but took up British citizenship in 2009, leads Leopard Trek's Jakob Fuglsang by 12 seconds, with Wiggins a further eight seconds behind and another favourite, the Italian Vincenzo Nibali at 31 seconds.

The 26-year-old will look to recover during Wednesday's rest day before taking to the Cantabrian mountains on Thursday where he may be expected to be asked to sacrifice his own ambitions in favour of Wiggins.
