Sun, sea, sand but no surf to go with it

Richard O'Connor

Ideal conditions were enjoyed by the surfers of Ireland this week with the weather behaving itself too for a change. From Malin to Mizen most good breaks were firing well throughout the week with 2- 3 foot waves in the Northwest and 2 foot waves in the West and South. 3 foot and offshore at Tullan beach, Donegal is hard to beat. Anyone who attended last year’s Eurosurf competition will understand how Tullan has a wave for everyone. The pros can surf top notch consistent rollers cliffside whilst beginners can get their fill of forgiving waves just 100 yards away. With the An Post Cycle Rás in Bundoran on Thursday tourists and locals alike had plenty reasons for excitement. Surfers in the South were busy midweek too with 2 foot clean waves in most places. Some good sets in West Cork ended a drought for many locals.

The waves are going to drop off for the weekend unfortunately. A period of calm will descend on Ireland’s seas. There could be some beginner waves on Sunday in Cork or Kerry. The hottest action though will primarily be from the sky with plenty opportunities to lose the farmer’s tan. It should be a fantastic weekend for windsurfers with moderate easterlies and high temperatures.

OUTLOOK:

Crack out the sunscreen. It going to be a good one. There is no heatwave on the way by any means but the weekend will be dry and sunny. A welcome dose of Vitamin D for many. Light to moderate easterly winds in most places. Saturday looks like it will be the best day to be out and about. If you manage to get on the water for a leisurely paddle slap some zinc stick on or expect a red face. Sunday will be fine too especially in the West and North. A few scattered clouds won’t dampen spirits too much in the South. Temperatures will range from 14 to 19 degrees Celsius, slightly hotter up north.

NORTH:

Tomorrow: Very light westerly swell with a 9 second period. Wind is light easterly, 11mph in Portrush. Not enough swell so don’t waste your time wave- hunting. High tide is at 6.33 am.

Sunday:  Similarly flat on Sunday. Winds are still easterly, light cross- shore but with a very weak westerly swell. 1 foot waves at best on Sunday evening. High tide is at 12.08pm in Portrush.

NORTHWEST:

Tomorrow: Poor westerly swell in Sligo and Donegal with a 9 second period, no waves. Light offshore winds from the East of 15 mph. High tide is at 9.58am in Donegal

Sun: On Sunday winds will be light easterly again so still favourable but with no swell to accompany them. 1 foot at best in the more exposed beach breaks. Sunbathing could be a better option. High tide is at 10.48am in Donegal.

WEST:

Tomorrow: Tame westerly swell with a 9 second period, not much surfing action on the way after a decent week. Expect it to be fairly flat. Moderate offshore winds of 18mph. Weather is looking pretty sweet at least. High tide is at 9.11am in Lahinch.

Sun: Winds of 15 mph from the east but no great swell about. No waves expected this weekend. High Tide in Lahinch is 10.00am

SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH:

Tomorrow: Light southwesterly swell with a 7 second period. Light to moderate easterly winds this weekend would make for favourable conditions in West Cork and Kerry if only there was a bit more swell around. Expect it to be fairly timid with 1 foot waves. Tramore’s waves should be fairly subdued too with a low period and a cross-onshore light breeze.

Sunday:  1 foot again in Kerry. Things should pick up a little on Sunday in Cork although still not much action to be had. Light southerly swell with 1-2 foot waves. Winds will be light and easterly throughout the day. It could be nice for beginners with gentle waves at Inchydoney in Cork on Sunday evening.
