? Former Newcastle United player is IFA's preferred candidate
? O'Neill won 33 caps when playing for Northern Ireland
Michael O'Neill is believed to be on the brink of being appointed the new manager of Northern Ireland. O'Neill was one of three candidates interviewed by the Irish Football Association for the post.
The others were Iain Dowie and Jim Magilton. However, O'Neill is reported to be the IFA's preferred candidate.
Confirmation of O'Neill's appointment is widely expected next week, subject to talks over personal terms. He has 33 Northern Ireland caps and scored seven goals for his country.
The Co Armagh-born O'Neill, who is 42, won consecutive league titles as the manager of Shamrock Rovers. He left the Dublin club after being unable to agree terms to continue as manager. His departure followed last week's defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League.
Perhaps the highlight of his playing career was while at Newcastle in the 1987-1988 season. He was the club's top goal scorer, with 12 goals in the top flight of English football, playing alongside Paul Gascoigne among others.
It is possible that Magilton, who was O'Neill's assistant at Shamrock Rovers, could join O'Neill as an assistant in the IFA post.
