TRIBUTES have been paid to the retiring chairwoman of Llanelli's committee of Cancer Research UK, Jayne Howarth.
Jayne's magnificent fundraising efforts have steered the committee to raking in a vast 190,000 in the town over the past 12 years.
Last year, Jayne was highly commended in the Charity Champion category at the Star's community awards.
The new president of the committee, Claire Mansel Lewis, was full of praise and gratitude for Jayne's work.
She said: "1999 was a momentous year for the Llanelli committee of Cancer Research as Jayne Howarth took over the role as chairperson.
"Since taking the helm, Jayne has steered the committee through a range of well-attended fundraising events.
"One thing that can be said for Jayne — she certainly had vision.
"As well as the usual rounds of collecting, dinner dances, quiz and curry nights, she also organised two very successful murder mystery evenings, a posh frock evening, barn dances, and even persuaded Chris Needs to give of his time.
"It is timely that Jayne should retire now as this past year saw the committee celebrate its 50th birthday and Jayne, in her usual style, organised an extremely successful Mad Hatter's Tea Party at Stradey Park Hotel, an event that will certainly be remembered by all who attended."
Boost
Claire added: "The work this committee has done under Jayne's fantastic guidance will provide a real boost for cancer research.
"The money raised by this committee will go towards vital research — which is something we don't really acknowledge but the outcome of such research is of enormous benefit.
"We are so grateful for her sterling efforts."
The new acting chairman, Andrew Stephens, manager of the St Elli Shopping Centre, said he was "very happy to take on the role and is looking forward to the next 50 years of fundraising".
He added: "I think Jayne's enthusiasm and personality shines through.
"And it's very difficult to say no to Jayne when you know the cause is such a great one."
