It's hotter than Ibiza! Leicestershire set to put Euro hotspots in the shade

Tourist attractions are predicting their busiest ever Easter as Leicestershire basks in temperatures higher than Ibiza.

Thermometers hit 23C (73F) in Leicestershire yesterday and the mercury could top 25C over the weekend.

With 5.3mm (0.2in) of rain so far, this month is well on the way to making the record books as the driest April for more than 50 years.

Thousands of people are expected to hit the county's parks to enjoy the heatwave during the four-day break.

Twinlakes theme park, near Melton, is expecting its busiest Easter, with more than 1,000 visitors a day.

Spokeswoman Philipa Bendall said: "The weather forecast is looking great.

"We've got Easter activities going on as well as lamb feeding and it should be a really great weekend."

Katie Owens, assistant manager at Gorse Hill City Farm, in Leicester, said it had been busy all week.

"Our car park was full yesterday and people were parked all the way down Anstey Lane," she said.

"We've got our Easter Extravaganza going on, with a fun fair, face painting, stalls and an egg hunt."

Great Central Railway has ordered in extra ice cream. "With fantastic weather forecast, we are really looking forward to a beautiful weekend," said commercial manager Richard Patching.

"We are looking forward to watching families experience the mainline in the sunshine."

Temperatures have risen so high in the UK in recent days that Leicestershire has been hotter than holiday destinations such as Malaga, Ibiza and Athens – where a maximum of 21C is expected this weekend.

Leicester Mercury weatherman Dave Mutton said there was not much hope of any more rain by the end of the month.

He said: "My own records go back to 1959 and the driest April so far was in 2007, when we had 8.6mm (0.34in).

"So this is very unusual. The weather is looking very promising for the weekend, though, with talk of temperatures of up to 25C, or 77F, in the coming days.

"It's turning out to be a very pleasant April."

A spokeswoman for Severn Trent Water said that while problems with the water supply were not likely, people should not be wasteful.

She said: "Although reservoir levels are a little below normal for this time of year, they are above our target levels.

"We are managing the situation closely and we are not anticipating any problems.

"However, we would encourage people to be sensible with their water usage."
