Australian Open 2012: Azarenka outburst mars victory

Belarussian bawls out line judge on way to defeating Mona Barthel, while Caroline Wozniacki beats quirky Niculescu

Victoria Azarenka progressed into the fourth round of the Australian Open despite a late outburst that marred her win against Mona Barthel.

The third seed from Belarus eventually won 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 28 minutes, but her inability to put the German away prompted a furious tirade at a line judge.

Despite being booed on match point on Hisense Arena, Azarenka held her nerve to claim the match and a place in the last 16.

She said: "I think I have been playing pretty good but I was not brave enough to finish the match. I had to get a little pissed off."

Next up for Azarenka is Czech Iveta Benesova, who thrashed Russian qualifier Nina Bratchikova 6-1, 6-3.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki followed Azarenka in making swift progress early on day five with a 6-2 6-2 win over unconventional Romanian Monica Niculescu.

Niculescu, the 31st seed, entertained the crown on Hisense Arena with a quirky game which sees her hit double-handed groundstrokes on both sides as well as mixing it up with the occasional sliced forehand and foray to the net.

It caused problems for Wozniacki but the Dane did well to come through and set up a fourth-round meeting with either Christina McHale or Jelena Jankovic.

"There's not too much rhythm [against her]," Wozniacki said. "She slices a lot from both sides and can play aggressive so you have to be on your feet to beat her."
