Fabio Capello picks Danny Welbeck to strengthen bond with England

? Fabio Capello says Welbeck is 'very important' for England
? Bent says he had to pull out with shoulder injury

Danny Welbeck is, on the face of it, an implausible member of the England squad that has been named for the friendly international against Holland at Wembley on Wednesday. Fabio Capello is unlikely to have been swayed by the two goals Welbeck has scored for Manchester United in pre-season friendlies, but the manager's interest in the forward has been sustained.

Welbeck made his international debut in a 1-1 draw with Ghana at Wembley in March. At that time, he was in a loan season with Sunderland, where he scored six goals. Capello was accused of giving him a cap simply to discourage Welbeck from taking up the option of playing for Ghana that he has through his parents. He was jeered by the opposition's fans when he came off the bench for the closing nine minutes.

But the England manager said he had picked Welbeck purely on merit. "Danny Welbeck is going to be a very important player for England and Manchester United," Capello said. Welbeck will be able to represent Ghana until he has appeared in a competitive international for England, but Capello is strengthening his bond with the 20-year-old.

Welbeck doubtless profited from the abscence of Darren Bent, the Aston Villa forward tweeting: "Gutted I had to pull out of the England squad, the shoulder has been bothering me and wanna make sure I'm fully fit for the big KO next week."

Welbeck will also appreciate that he is one of only four forwards chosen for the squad, with Peter Crouch, Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll. Other candidates have been overlooked, but the match is a friendly and Welbeck could be the one experiment Capello is allowing himself before the European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria in Sofia on September 2.

The fact that Welbeck is in his thoughts shows the importance that Manchester now has for Capello. Eleven of his 25-man squad are from United or City, the clubs who meet in the Community Shield on Sunday. That rivalry is intense and Welbeck may come to be as proud of any appearances he is allowed in the Premier League as he is of the one he might enjoy with England this week.
