James Hildreth half-century rights Somerset innings against Middlesex

Somerset 130-4 v Middlesex

Rain prevented Middlesex from profiting fully from a rare Nick Compton failure in their County Championship match against Somerset at Lord's.

Little has gone wrong for the prolific Compton this season other than missing out on reaching 1,000 first-class runs before the end of May by a single day.

Even then the 28-year-old was able to temper any disappointment with his third Championship century of the season against Worcestershire. But he was brought back to earth at on Tuesday when he failed to play a shot and was bowled by Tim Murtagh for one.

That left Somerset in a hole at two for one, after the opener Alex Barrow failed to score, but Middlesex's early gains were nullified by a battling 58 from James Hildreth.

Hildreth lasted 132 balls before he was caught behind to give Gareth Berg his 100th first-class wicket, ending an 80-run stand with Craig Kieswetter (48no) before the rain came after 48.5 overs with Somerset on 130 for four.
