Presidency: Otuoke church not gift to Jonathan

The renovated Anglican Church in Otuoke, Bayelsa State was not donated to President Goodluck Jonathan as it is being alleged by opposition parties, the Presidency said yesterday.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Reuben Abati said in a statement that the church renovation was a show of corporate social responsibility by a construction company doing business in the state.

Abati said the church was not a gift to the President as alleged saying ?For the avoidance of any doubt whatsoever, the renovated church in Otuoke does not belong to President Jonathan or his family. The Church belongs to the Anglican Communion and the entire Otuoke Community.

?It has existed for generations and is not a new church ?donated? to President Jonathan by his ?contractor friend? as is being mischievously alleged.?

He said the gesture was not unprecedented as examples of such donations by corporate bodies abound in the country.

Abati described calls for the President?s impeachment on the ground of the church donation to his community as laughable saying ?President Jonathan never solicited or received a church as ?bribe? from any contractor.?
