The waiting for the most anticipated Masters for years is almost over and so, it would seem, are the last vestiges of affection between Rory McIlroy and his former agent, Andrew "Chubby" Chandler, and stablemate Lee Westwood.
The Northern Irishman revisited his decision last autumn to split from Chandler's International Sports Management, saying the company was taking his career in the wrong direction. "I felt like the path I was going down wasn't the path I wanted to go down," he said in an interview with a Dublin-based website, Irishgolfdesk.com.
McIlroy cited his decision in 2010 to give up his PGA Tour card, and skipping the Players Championship at Sawgrass in the same season, as among his biggest regrets. "That's another example of being involved with Chubby and ISM and maybe being led down the wrong path, or a path that I didn't want to go down. It was something I sort of felt like I had to do. I think just spending a little bit of time around Chubby and Lee and hearing their view of the PGA Tour ? obviously they're very pro-European Tour ? while I've always been one who wanted to play on the PGA Tour."
The Northern Irishman revealed he returned to Augusta National last week, playing a practice round on Wednesday accompanied by his caddie, JP Fitzgerald. Last year he blew a four-shot lead on Sunday, shooting a final-round 80 which included a triple-bogey seven at the 10th hole, where his tee shot ended up near cabins far to the left of the fairway. "Hopefully, this year, I won't see those cabins quite so close up. I don't look at it as revenge really. It would just be great to put myself in a position to win again and if I can do that, it will be great to see if I can handle things a little bit better," he said.
