LABOUR has welcomed an exit poll showing it was stretching its lead.
Almost half of the electorate would vote for Labour, putting Carwyn Jones's party in front of its nearest rivals, the Conservatives, according to the ITV Wales-commissioned YouGov poll.
In 2007 Labour won 26 seats — the most seats out of any party — but went into coalition with Plaid, who won 15, after failing to win an overall majority.
A party spokesman said: "We are getting a very positive response on the doorstep to our pledges and our promise to stand up for Wales, but we know that there is still a tough battle ahead. Welsh Labour's membership and activist base is really fired up and we are taking nothing for granted, the hard work will carry on right up until close of polls on May 5.
"It will be interesting to see if the other parties re-think their incessantly negative campaigns in light of the recent polling, but whatever they decide to do we will be sticking to our plan to set out a positive vision for Wales."
