Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg visited a Sikh temple in Leicester on Saturday as part of a Liberal Democrats campaign tour.
Along with the party's Leicester South Parliamentary by-election candidate, Zuffar Haq, Mr Clegg spent time with members of the Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara, in North Evington.
The aim was to find out about issues affecting the Sikh community in Leicester and nationally.
He also made a speech in which he wished the members of the temple a happy Vaisakhi.
Speaking afterwards about Mr Haq's campaign in Leicester, Mr Clegg said: "I think Zuffar is emerging as a really solid candidate.
"He's someone who knows every street corner in Leicester.
"I'm struck by how many people, from all different communities, know who he is. And that's what we want in this area."
Members of the temple were excited to meet the Deputy Prime Minister.
Karandeep Giddha, Mohan Gill and Sarandeep Dhami, who are studying Punjabi at the temple, met Mr Clegg during a lesson.
Karandeep, 13, said: "I couldn't believe he had the time to come here."
Mohan, also 13, said: "He was talking to us about learning Punjabi.
"I thought he was going to be strict but he was very friendly."
Teacher Bhajan Kaur said: "I feel very proud that he visited the Gurdwara."
The campaign tour also took Mr Clegg to Sheffield, the city he represents as an MP, and Birmingham on Saturday.
